E) Note the challenges involved in IVF with Donor eggs or sperm in Japan

2023年10月01日

In Japan, there are currently no specific laws governing the use of third-party sperm or egg donations for Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART). Only a few medical facilities offer ART using donor sperm or eggs, and their processes are usually complex.

Artificial Insemination with Donor sperm (AID)

Currently only 16 registered facilities🔎in Japan offer AID.

Only legally married couples who have medical reasons, such as being diagnosed with Azoospermia, are eligible to receive donor sperm.

To start the AID process, eligible couples need to submit various documents and questionnaires. Following this, they will have a consultation with a psychologist and undergo evaluation by an Ethics Committee. This entire process is conducted in Japanese and aims to assess if the recipients are suitable parents for a child conceived with donor sperm. Please note the process may vary depending on the medical facility.

IVF with Donor sperm or eggs

Clinics in Japan rarely perform IVF procedures using donor sperm or donor eggs because of the guidelines set by The Japanese Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The Society does not acknowledge the use of donor eggs or sperm in IVF treatments.

However, in Taiwan, there are laws in place that recognize and allow the use of donor sperm or donor eggs in both Artificial Insemination and IVF procedures. These laws ensure that medical practitioners follow strict guidelines to protect the rights and safety of both the providers and recipients involved in the process.
